<![CDATA[Greater London - Camden - Camden - Eating, Drinking and Nightlife - Bars - Reviews]]> http://www.welovelocal.com Reviews from welovelocal.com en Music venue and bar! http://www.welovelocal.com/en/london/camden/camden/bars/tommy-flynns-nw17jh.html#r15684 A nice homely place that is actually bigger than it looks. The decorations in there are magnificent, there is just so much to look at and take in. Shelves are covering the walls and there are things from old violins to boats in glass bottles! The stage however is quite small. infact tiny but they always seem to pull it off somehow. This is probably one of the more trendier places in Camden, so expect to see a few famous faces...not that I would concider the singer from The Towers Of London famous...but there are others.

Pleasant Place http://www.welovelocal.com/en/london/camden/camden/bars/bar-vinyl-nw17hj.html#r15302 Too quiet, "confident" and with a welcome atmosphere , the Bar Vinyl is one of the first bars, in London, that gave hospitality to the DJs. There are particular retró chairs and music is pleasant. To spend some hours in this bar is a real pleasure, but, don't go there on the weekend becasue it would be a mission impossible to find a seat!

Generally a bit odd http://www.welovelocal.com/en/london/camden/camden/bars/oh-bar-nw17jn.html#r13782 Place has live music at the back most nights and has a collection of odd locals at the front most days.

Big bar area but gets busy at the weekends. Free wifi access if you buy a drink.

Beyond the Thunderdome http://www.welovelocal.com/en/london/camden/camden/bars/the-purple-turtle-nw11tn.html#r10180 A good venue to see some interesting bands, though the brushed steel and punding techno in the daytime reminds me of a Lazerzone, or a futuristic post-apocalyptic film from the mid 80s.

Gives a great backstage performance, too! http://www.welovelocal.com/en/london/camden/camden/bars/the-jazz-cafe-nw17pg.html#r3763 This is one London venue I can actually review as an artiste as well as a member of the audience attending a gig as, in 2005, I performed in my friend Nicolette's trio of backing singers - giving this fine funky place my fine funky all.. Watching Richie Havens and Swing Out Sister perform here in the past, I was then able to confirm, from a unique vantage point on stage myself, that the Jazz Cafe completely excels itself in sound and in lighting. Its bijou but bustling square footage offers lively audiences a unique, close-up, intimate stage-side view of all the action. We were served well by an excellent management team who made us feel comfortable and cared for backstage - ensuring our every need was fed, watered and relaxed to the full. I concur that the Jazz Cafe gives audiences a great place to feel the vibe of the city and to sample music which would otherwise never be given as good a chance to be heard live.

Good music shame about the smell http://www.welovelocal.com/en/london/camden/camden/bars/the-purple-turtle-nw11tn.html#r3232 Went to a gig here the other night, 4 bands were on in total and they where a good mix so well done on the choice. The venue is quiet spacious with little places to sit down around the stage but enough tables at the back if you need a rest. The prices at the bar were not extortionate but about average. The barmaid who was left to serve on her own was very friendly and quick even though busy. I think the overall atmosphere in the place would have been better had it been fuller. The only really bad point though was the toilets. Now I have been to alot of gigs in dodgy bars but the toilets here were the worst I have ever smelt. Just going up the stairs to them was the strong smell of pee and it was overwhelming in the girls bathroom. The toilet looked clean enough but the smell of pee was near unbearable. So by all means go along and see a band but only if you can hold off on going to the toilet all night.

Nice http://www.welovelocal.com/en/london/camden/camden/bars/the-jazz-cafe-nw17pg.html#r2958 Not as old or as famous as most of London's other jazz venues, the Jazz Cafe has a good reputation and deservedly so. Founded in 1990 and bought by the Mean Fiddler organisation in 1992, it treads a tricky path between live music, all sorts of jazz, artists other big venues can’t or won’t risk booking, and club culture. It is conveniently located just outside Camden Town tube station.

Laid out with the stage along a side wall and the bar at one end, there is a seating area behind the bar and room upstairs for diners. Cloakrooms and the often talked about toilets are downstairs.

The real appeal of the Jazz Cafe is the fine selection of artists and support bands who play there. I have recently been to see 70s rare-groove band Cymande, and Italian movie jazzmeister extraordinaire, Nicola Conte. Although never sampling it myself, I do hear the food is good too.

On the other hand, drinks are expensive for a Camden venue, service is sometimes slow ( no wonder with 2 barpersons serving the whole venue!) and sometimes tickets can be had cheaper on the door than at the pre-booked prices.

Overall, a good place for a night out with a difference.
