<![CDATA[Greater London - Islington - Archway - Eating, Drinking and Nightlife - Pubs - Reviews]]> http://www.welovelocal.com Reviews from welovelocal.com en Beats the Rest http://www.welovelocal.com/en/london/islington/archway/pubs/settle-inn-n193tx.html#r52741 This pub is very different to the less than welcoming watering holes in the surrounding area. The pub has reveiwed and revitalised its staff off late. Accomodating Land lady often cooks for special occasions free of charge! New Thai chef started last month and the food has gone from good to fantastic. Free and fun quiz has developed a following, place is frequented by all types, doctors, barristers and tradesmen. Clean fresh pints!

A time warp http://www.welovelocal.com/en/london/islington/archway/pubs/whittington-cat-n195ne.html#r43416 They don't have many of these places anymore! A tiny, homely pub, run by elderly people for elderly local people. It looks like somebody has knitted it in 1910. Very quiet, very friendly. Although you might stick out like a sore thumb amongst the locals, they treat you nicely. Cheap as well. A place for a quiet pint or more. No TV noise. Never seen anybody eat there, but I bet the landlady would prepare something simple for you if you asked. Lovely pub stuck in a time warp, and that's the way it should stay. God save the village green!

it's a Bar One, apart from name http://www.welovelocal.com/en/london/islington/archway/pubs/settle-inn-n193tx.html#r43415 A bland and rather soulless place; blond pine furnishings look stuck in limbo between an All Bar One and a Scandinavian roadside inn. The clients are late twenties - early thirties. Nothing much is going on. Service is OK and the food is on the good side, with generous portions but rather unimaginative. But they do carry all the major newspapers, which makes it a pretty good place to stop at when walking up Archway Road

an odd but interesting place http://www.welovelocal.com/en/london/islington/archway/pubs/old-crown-n195nq.html#r43413 The workings of this pub has always been unclear to me. It is big, random, rather understated in decor, but very attractive in its way. There is a small but nice beer garden at the back, and several tables out in front. But there is hardly ever anybody there! This means that the service is quick and friendly, because the bar is ridiculously overstaffed, usually with three people serving perhaps five to ten customers. As for foood, I don't think they do much of it; apart from chips and sandwhiches. I go there often for a beer. The view across the road is absolutely fabulous, looking at a huge old catholic church; very calming. The pub actually seems to make its money from wedding parties (the church!) at weekends - then they do food indeed. It has never ceased to amaze me that the place is not crowded every night, it could outdo every pub in the area.

Angel of the North http://www.welovelocal.com/en/london/islington/archway/pubs/the-angel-inn-n65jt.html#r13562 A proper grown-up pub, to drink beer in, to eat good food, to sit and play chess, to relax with the sunday papers. They also have acoustic nights, quiz nights, and film nights. I've only given it 4 stars rather than 5, cos it does get busy when the world and his dog decide to also have a nice quiet Sunday in here, meaning that to get a seat you have to be there at some stupidly early time - and who wants to do that on a Sunday?

Drink With Mother http://www.welovelocal.com/en/london/islington/archway/pubs/the-mother-redcap-n195se.html#r13553 A proper Irish pub - not in the O'Neill's sense of the word - but in the sense of men of all generations having a haven away from their wives, to drink, to play pool, to watch sports on the TV, and to drink some more. Apparently there's irish folk music on some evenings but I didnt see that, so I've no idea what thats like, but if its anything like this pub it'll be unpretentious, and more than a bit rough round the edges.

great restaurant http://www.welovelocal.com/en/london/islington/archway/pubs/st-johns-tavern-n195qu.html#r12464 a bit overpriced, but great atmosphere in the restaurant at the back, and perfect for any occasion be it a date or going out in with a group of friends. The pub at the front is lacking in atmosphere in comparison.

A dying breed http://www.welovelocal.com/en/london/islington/archway/pubs/the-crown-n193pa.html#r9668 This is the sort of North London Irish alehouse that is, sadly, on the endangered list. Make no mistake, this is a proper old man's pub - go elsewhere if you want trendy imported continental lagers or gastropub fat chips. A pint of beer and a packet of crisps is the order of the day here. And why not? Sometimes you just need a nice friendly place to pop into for a swift one (or three) while you watch the football. Be warned, though: the ladies' loos are always freezing cold, so wrap up warm if you're indending on using the facilities.
