<![CDATA[Greater London - Lambeth - Lambeth - Eating, Drinking and Nightlife - Reviews]]> http://www.welovelocal.com Reviews from welovelocal.com en Sexy. http://www.welovelocal.com/en/london/lambeth/lambeth/pubs/the-steam-engine-se17bu.html#r43454 The main thing that attracts me here week after week is the unique and pungent odour of urine that permeates every inch of the building (except, bizarrely, the actual toilets).

It really burns the nostrils, and provides a perfect backdrop to a boozer heaving with rough and ready pub cliches: dodgy blokes selling knocked-off items? Check. Beer stained pool table? Check. An incredible array of nuts, crisps and scratchings? Oh yes.

The beer is cheap, and tastes it. They used to have Sky Sports, until it was taken away to save money. Then they lost their two massive TVs to debt collecters. I can honestly say this is the best pub in London to watch the BBC's football coverage on a portable television chained to a shelf.

Quiz machines, wizened locals and a jukebox add to the ambience. There's a pub up the road called The Pineapple which has great food, lovely beer, is often busy and doesn't smell of wee. Ponces. Go here instead.

High quality family run restaurant in Kennington http://www.welovelocal.com/en/london/lambeth/lambeth/british-restaurants/franklins-se115qs.html#r39542 A great menu of stuff - the smoked mackeral and beetroot for starter is highly recommended. They do sweetbreads as well if you're feeling brave.

It's a bit like Baltic on Blackfriars Bridge road, but smaller and more intimate.

only criticism is that it's a bit pricy (£35-40 a head when we went) which means it can often be a bit empty.
