Chicken lovers of the world unite and take over http://www.welovelocal.com/en/london/lambeth/tulse-hill/restaurant-bars/the-gallery-sw21hf.html#r6549 Nestled between a funeral home and dodgy looking minicab joint on the scruffier end of Brixton Hill is this Portuguese nugget of pure culinary gold. It's an unpolished nugget, but gold nonetheless.

The Gallery specialises in take-away piri piri chicken, and puts folks like Nando's to shame. You'll be sucking the bones on these tasty birds, no doubt, and the spiced rice on the side makes for a yummier and much healthier option than the dozens of fried chicken chains that line Brixton Hill. In addition to their legendary chicken - and it really IS legendary in these parts - they also serve up lamb cutlets and steak sandwiches in their bustling takeaway area.

Tucked behind this humble facade is a full Portuguese restaurant, which only opens on weekends to serve up traditional dishes such as bacalao to Brixton's hungry masses. One taste and you'll be hooked on this quirky little family-run place.

Nothing fancy, but tasty http://www.welovelocal.com/en/london/lambeth/tulse-hill/fast-food-takeaway/pizza-man-sw24eh.html#r6548 Pizza Man is our favourite local cheap & cheerful pizza place, for those times when hunger strikes, the cupboards are bare, you've only a fiver and you simply gotta eat within 25 minutes. Their delivery service is incredibly quick (mind you, we are pretty near), and their pizzas are good if not exceptional.

When we want to splash out, we go for Firezza or Basilico or some other stone-baked pizza with posh-sounding names, but Pizza Man will be with you in half the time, at half the price, and service with a smile.

Not too much atmosphere http://www.welovelocal.com/en/london/lambeth/tulse-hill/pubs/crown-sceptre-sw24ah.html#r3134 The Crown and Sceptre is merely an average Weatherspoons, apart from the fact that it has a far better range of beer than most, including some of my favourites – Abbott Ale and Spitfire seem to be the most permanent of a constantly rotating selection. And, let's face it, for under £2 a pint, who's complaining? – especially since, unlike a Samuel Smith's pub, you get a choice.

The food is precisely as you'd expect; cheap and served with no great finesse.

Many people complain that Weatherspoon's pubs don't have much atmophere: although the Crown and Sceptre does try, when a pub is on the border between Brixton and Streatham, you really don't want too much atmosphere...!

Exactly as you would expect http://www.welovelocal.com/en/london/lambeth/tulse-hill/pubs/crown-sceptre-sw24ah.html#r2731 Boring as it may sound, The Crown and Sceptre is your 100% average Wetherspoon's. They have a good range of ales on tap normally, but beyond that there's nothing special here.

The food is okay, but exactly replicated in every other 'spoons across the land. They do have a beer garden, which is handy as they are remarkably few and far between in this part of London, but it is also directly on the very busy road.
