<![CDATA[Greater London - Lewisham - Brockley - Reviews]]> http://www.welovelocal.com Reviews from welovelocal.com en The best local kebab shop http://www.welovelocal.com/en/london/lewisham/brockley/fast-food-takeaway/gulen-kebab-se42rs.html#r41414 On a drunken rant whilst at university I remember telling friends that one of thekey criteria for moving somewhere was the local kebab shop. I was wasted it was very late and I was trying to convince them that my local kebab shop in Kilburn was excellent and a reason for moving here.

However, when I bought my first flat in Brockley I forgot about the Kebab rule and ended up dining on inferior chicken and lamb shish for a couple of years.

Gullens isn't bad but it's not a patch on kebabs from North of the river. Manor House, Dalston and even Kilburn kebabaries run rings around it.

Gullen's is also the only kebab shop local to the station/stumbling distance home so by default it is the best local kebab shop. Worth a shout after a big night out but that's about it.

Cockroach Attack, Police Called!!! http://www.welovelocal.com/en/london/lewisham/brockley/thai-restaurants/just-thai-thai-se42sa.html#r34626 We had planned to go out to Smiles Thai cafe near Brockley train station. Unfortunately they were closed and decided to go to just Thai Thai. We were apprehensive as on passing on numerous occasions this restaurant often looked dead but this evening was fairly busy.

My friend went to the toilet and was greeted by a cockroach! Because all 4 of us were starving we decided to give it a chance and stayed. We very subtly mentioned our discovery to the waitress who seemed unperturbed.

The service that greeted us was one of disorganization, overhearing queries over dishes from neighboring tables. The waitress clearly could not cope.

When ordering wine and the starters, our first and second choices were not avaiable and generally all our food arrived late and staggered.

Two of us in the party ordered the same dish (jungle curry) the first to arrive tasted fowl (inedible) consisting of chewy meat, dishwater and raw vegetables.

The second dish that arrived tasted totally different but equally inedible.

When explained to the waitress that we were not going to pay for these two dishes and would like two new dishes, she returned with a message from the chef/owner that we had to pay and there was nothing wrong with the dishes and that she the waitress was going to be blamed.

When underlining our point the chef/owner came to our table greeting us by pointing at us with a raised tone stating that we had caused trouble from the moment we had walked in whilst straight away clearing all our plates, she would not listen at all to our complaint and concerns and explained 'cockroaches were everywhere in Brockley and that she herself had previously killed millions', (in a proud tone)

We offered to pay for all the rest of the food and drinks that we had but she was just didn't listen and kept on saying she was going to call the police, we then gave up trying to communicate with her and all got up leaving money on the table that we thought would be sufficient to cover the food and drinks that we had eaten.

By the time we walked through she was already on the pone to the police.

A truly awful restaurant experience that left us gobsmacked and hungry!! If anyone would like a good Thai meal in Brockley go to smiles.

Sunday at the Toad http://www.welovelocal.com/en/london/lewisham/brockley/cafes/the-toads-mouth-too-se42rl.html#r19256 This looks like a fairly good deli/sandwich bar. However, once inside the tardis like interior you realise it's a great cafe/bar.

Downstairs there's art on the walls, a couple of bright rooms and an amazing garden. It's a great place to read the Sunday papers and enjoy a tasty fried or healthy breakfast. Also don't forget to overlook it as a quite night out.

Fresh Spring Rolls http://www.welovelocal.com/en/london/lewisham/brockley/cafes/l-y-l-t-cafe-se42rw.html#r10050 You need to give this take-away/small restaurant a chance. The food is authentic, well priced and very tasty. The staff are friendly and always cheery.

I've since left the area and when back there I'll always pop in to say hi to the guys and grab some food. The Singapore noodles, curry and ribs are amazing, possibly the best I've had in London. The spring rolls if you can convince them to cook are the best I've ever hard.

I would have given it five stars but the decor was looking tired and there are less tables. The food is still excellent and is a must when visiting this part of London.

A very racist restaurant http://www.welovelocal.com/en/london/lewisham/brockley/thai-restaurants/just-thai-thai-se42sa.html#r8905 My partner took me to this little empty Thai restaurant for my 25th birthday and it almost spoiled the evening. We were hoping it was empty because it was an undiscovered treasure, oh were we wrong!

We were greeted by a nice waitress and even though we were the only people eating here our starters took 20mins, it was greasy and all deep fried. When our main meal arrived 30mins later my food came 10mins before my partners and it was cold, my partners green curry had oil floating on the top as Thai food enthusiasts we knew this was not good. We could not eat the food and decided we would pay for the drinks and starter and leave.

I stepped aside and let my partner explain to the owner that the food was not nice, but we were told we had to pay the full bill. When we refused the 'manager' declared that they "always have trouble with coloureds." My partner, who is white and had been doing all the complaining was livid and suggested that the bad food and service was why the restaurant was empty again! I was so shocked I watched quietly as again the owner explained that she always has problems with black people and WE were asked to leave.

It was a wholly shocking and disgusting dinning experience, if you are even thinking about it, don't. If the service doesn't offend you the food will. There is a reason why Just Thai Thai is always empty, but I am not sure why it is still open.
