<![CDATA[Greater London - Southwark - Dulwich - Eating, Drinking and Nightlife - Cafes - Reviews]]> http://www.welovelocal.com Reviews from welovelocal.com en You wouldn't expect this kind of place in Dulwich http://www.welovelocal.com/en/london/southwark/dulwich/cafes/jacks-tea-coffee-house-se229jd.html#r47049 This place truly is a hidden gem, slightly off the main drag of Lordship Lane's cafes, boutiques and baby shops. I had the most amazing breakfast here with quite simply the best scrambled eggs I have ever had in London. £5.95 for smoked salmon, eggs, toast, fresh juice and a hot drink. I think that's probably the priciest thing on the menu. Their lunchtime menu seems quite reasonably priced - goats cheese tarts, chorizo ciabatta, that kind of thing. Plus a variety of fresh produce for sale.

A lovely place with a small outside seating area, plus plenty to keep the kids amused.

The coffee is burnt! http://www.welovelocal.com/en/london/southwark/dulwich/cafes/caffe-nero-se228hn.html#r43740 I don't want to wade into the 'dreadful chains invading discrete Dulwich' debate - presumably they're here because they have a market, and in a 'free world' - who are we to tell people that Green and Blue up the road does coffee that is about 10 times better than the burnt stuff these guys serve. These places serve a purpose, they are kid and buggy friendly, which people criticise them for, but often they are convenient if you are cursed with kids. But the thing I don't get with these places is that the coffee is pretty bad. You'd think if you're going to set up a successful coffee business you'd be selling a product that is wonderful, and that justifies the money? Well, Starbucks, Costa and Nero - the coffee isn't good enough!

A treat at modest prices http://www.welovelocal.com/en/london/southwark/dulwich/cafes/jacks-tea-coffee-house-se229jd.html#r28177 An oasis of good fresh and freshly cooked food at distinctly non Dulwich prices. The staff manage to be both effidient and friendly and they positively welcome small children (accompanied, of course), unlike nearby establishments. Totally unpretentious.

friendly café off the beaten track http://www.welovelocal.com/en/london/southwark/dulwich/cafes/jacks-tea-coffee-house-se229jd.html#r9086 This café is tucked away on the outer edges of the East Duwich mainstream. The food is great quality and fresh tasting, with a warm friendly service. Good falafel is hard to find in south london, and the falafel baguette is one the highlights that draws me back for more. My wife is a regular here, because it is friendly and intimate, a great place to catch up with friends over some tasty treats. It can be quite cramped if its busy, but the garden is open during the warmer months.

Boo to the franchises http://www.welovelocal.com/en/london/southwark/dulwich/cafes/caffe-nero-se228hn.html#r9053 Cafe Nero, the coffee is better than the average franchise. Yet it was a sad day when this place sprang up. Maybe it heralded the beginning of the end for the area? There were already plenty of great little cafés around, I fail to see why a big franchise needed to come and spoil the fun? Now the high street is lined with franchises posing as wanabee boutiques, all selling the same tat.

I saw a great poster in a window saying, why dont we all go to the foxtons over the road to order our free coffee and put both these chains out of business in one foul swoop. Hear hear...
