<![CDATA[Greater London - Wandsworth - Putney - Eating, Drinking and Nightlife - Pubs - Reviews]]> http://www.welovelocal.com Reviews from welovelocal.com en Who's quizzing tonight? http://www.welovelocal.com/en/london/wandsworth/putney/pubs/the-queen-adelaide-sw181np.html#r32215 Our favourite "local".

The Queen Adelaide is deceptively large - check out the fantastic patio'd and grassed garden out back on long summer evenings.

The food is good, the beer is flowing, the service is always good standard, and (drumroll please) it has the best Monday night pub quiz thanks to quizmaster Alex. These start of the week sessions regularly bring in folks to fill the place to over capacity (NB: don't take your sweetheart there on a Monday night for a romantic dinner). It's also the spot for a perfect post picnic pint on those sunny Sundays in Wandsworth Park.

A great crowd heads to this place and the vibe is very friendly and relaxed. I've never had a bad night here. Contant and consistent, the Adelaide is one of the keepers.

Summer sun and winter boardgames http://www.welovelocal.com/en/london/wandsworth/putney/pubs/jolly-gardener-sw151nt.html#r32161 The Jolly Gardener has indeed had a refurb - though those with long-standing memories will know that the original one turned what was a "true local" into the trendier version it has become today.

Doing what it says on the tin, the JG delivers a spot of sun via a decent sized front "garden", complete with a few hanging vines and plenty of tables and chairs.

Inside a large eclectic space provides for cozy corners or larger group sofa spaces for any type of pub gathering for you and your mates, with a selection of boardgames on hand for long rainy afternoons, and a coveted fireside spot for winter chills.

The food is upper plain pub and lower gastro standard, tastey and not too pricey.

The place has a decent vibe and is quite chilled out. Service-wise I've never run into any real issues, though they can be understaffed on a Sunday particularly.

It's a good place to go for a chat and a chill - with no sports focus and less loud than alot of the pubs in Putney.

Be sure to check out the wallpaper in the ladies loos - what's that all about!?

A bit of a void http://www.welovelocal.com/en/london/wandsworth/putney/pubs/the-larrik-sw64rn.html#r17855 Not a lot to say on this place really, the food's pretty miserable and it's overpriced.

It's got really high ceilings, and a big floor space which is made to look even larger by the fact that there's never anyone in there.

Only time I've seen it busy is during a match. I wouldn't bother to be honest!

Same as most... but a nice view http://www.welovelocal.com/en/london/wandsworth/putney/pubs/the-slug-lettuce-sw151rr.html#r14648 It's a slug and lettuce, so you kinda know what you're gonna get.

But putney high street's a nice place to sit and booze and watch the world go by.

Handily situated near the train station, it's as good a place to meet people for a drink if you can't be arsed to walk down to the riverside.

Good Live Music Venue http://www.welovelocal.com/en/london/wandsworth/putney/pubs/half-moon-sw151eu.html#r12797 I have been here a few times for gigs and it's a good venue for it, quite intimate with a small stage to the corner of the room. The bar area outside is much larger, with band photos all over the wall to get you in the mood. One of south west London's most renowned live music venues.

Check it out when the sun is shining http://www.welovelocal.com/en/london/wandsworth/putney/pubs/jolly-gardener-sw151nt.html#r12549 Another local that has under gone a refurbishment making it "trendy" for the naughties and the local under 35s.

Victorian style, tables and chairs mixed and matched, such as chesterfield wing backed chairs with large wooden tables, making a nice enough setting with candles in votives in the evening, ambient lighting.

Extensive beer list and plenty of out door seating, brilliant for when the sun comes out.

Food menu looks good, but to be fair I've not yet sampled.

I've been a couple times since New Year '08. And the service has been very poor. Nice people, just didn't know what they were doing. We sent one of our larger pints back as it was from the tap but was definately not quiet right. (pipes?). The bar staff replaced it after checking with the duty manager. It seemed like a bit of a hassle, but unnecessarily so. Just seemed like teething problems but made our experience on that occasion a bit crap.

It has potential to be a really nice place, lots of space and dividing walls which create hidden away corners so you can have you own group space. Alternatively sit in the main open plan section and check out the other drinkers.

This place has definitely been taken over by the younger set and with busy after work drinkers.

Worth a look in http://www.welovelocal.com/en/london/wandsworth/putney/pubs/prince-of-wales-sw152sp.html#r12529 This place under went a refurbishment and transformation about Sept 2007.

I've been here prior to the transformation and thought, local old mans pub, NOT warm and friendly.

Post "transformation"... it has an amazing menu and wine list, competent staff and a quiz on Sundays. The clientiee in my opinion has changed to the Putney/Fulham young professional set.

Outdoor seating which is handy for the smokers and for the rare bit of sunshine that we get here in the UK. Although it is facing onto Upper Richmond Road, so you are on a busy traffic through-fair, watching the cars go by.

Inside part of the pub is under skylights/conservatory(?) probably best way to describe it, light and airy not at all stuffy.

Check it out, food is good and it is a very different incarnation.

Exploitative http://www.welovelocal.com/en/london/wandsworth/putney/pubs/the-duke39s-head-sw151jn.html#r3043 The Duke's Head is in a prime spot beside The Thames at Putney and, boy, do they know it. Consequently, the drinks and particularly the food are extortionately-priced. I'd say prohibitively priced except that would be demonstrably untrue - on my visit I stayed from half past six until 11.45 or thereabouts. River pubs have that effect, I suppose. However, a recent refurb has resulted in the huge bar overlooking the Thames being turned into a restaurant and you can no longer just sit there with a pint watching the coxless pairs skulling past in their squiffs, or whatever it is they do.

You can, however, follow most people's example and drink outside. Lovely on a summer's evening, even drinking from the plastic glasses they force on you.

It's a Young's pub so there's a decent range of beers and lagers, although on my visit they didn't have the Youngs Double Chocolate Stout.

Relax and unwind http://www.welovelocal.com/en/london/wandsworth/putney/pubs/the-idle-hour-sw151sl.html#r2559 The Idle hour is a super pub to have a nice quiet drink at with friends. If you're looking for a lively bar then this isn't the place to go (try further up the high street). If, on the other hand, you're looking for a quaint, cosy pub (or trendy bar) to relax in where you're able to chat to friends then this is a quality place to meet. The food wasn't the best but if you have to eat then the burgers are the safe option and were actually not that bad. The decor and atmosphere is perfect for chilling out with comfy deep couches to sit (or lie) in.
