No direction at all http://www.welovelocal.com/en/london/westminster/mayfair/bride-groom-shop/the-wedding-shop-w1c1js.html#r17582 I made the mistake of visiting the most attentive and helpful bridal shop before going to The Wedding Shop in Selfridges - which I felt was such a huge let down.

I didn't know where to begin when I started looking for my dress - I had an idea in my head but I really wanted to try on all the different styles to make sure I was buying the right dress, style, colour and detail to suit me (not some 6 ft model I'd seen in a magazine).

The first place I went to asked me to choose the dress that I thought I wanted - which turned out to be a complete nightmare as it didn't suit me at all. Then the shop assistant listened to my comments of what I felt was wrong about the dress and guided me to the perfect dress which I immediately fell in love with.

So when I turned up at Selfridges, I was kind of expecting the same level of service - but sadly this was not to be. I was told to pick out 4 dresses to try on, which was mind-boggling when you're in a tiny area cornered off from the main shop, surrounded by about 150 dresses.

The assistant disappeared for about 15mins and finally returned to find me utterly confused. I asked her to help guide me through the dresses but she told me just to pick 4 that I liked.

I ended up trying on 4 dresses which weren't right for me at all, so the whole thing was a waste of time. I tried to explain what I was looking for but the assistant just didn't offer any advice (perhaps she didn't really know the stock well enough?)

Anyway - I felt that the whole experience was such a let-down and a waste of time, I wouldn't bother going there unless you are absolutely certain you want a Vera Wang original...

Good selection, patchy service http://www.welovelocal.com/en/london/westminster/mayfair/bride-groom-shop/browns-bride-w1k4hs-1.html#r3400 Buying a wedding dress is stressful and I found the Browns experience particularly stress inducing. I didn't feel listened to, or appreciated as a customer (despite spending several thousand pounds on a dress). If you want to wear certain designers, you don't have much choice but I have to say I wouldn't recommend the store otherwise. Sorry.

Fashionista Brides http://www.welovelocal.com/en/london/westminster/mayfair/bride-groom-shop/browns-bride-w1k4hs-1.html#r1007 The thing about Browns Brides is that they have the best bridal gowns in town. Which means you have to beg for an appointment, and they wont exactly fawn over you.. but if you want an equisite, modern, romantic dress then you can't beat their selection. Oscar de la Renta, Peter Langner etc etc. And, they are right next to Claridges, which is perfect for post appointment cocktails with your bridesmaids.

Little White Dress http://www.welovelocal.com/en/london/westminster/mayfair/bride-groom-shop/pronovias-w1s1sh.html#r813 London has too few good bridalshops. Pronovias is a serious Spanish wedding dress outfit that has just opened a flagship store here (Nov 06) on New Bond Street. Previously their designs were only available through small random independent outlets as far as I can tell, so it's great that you can now see the whole collection in one giant store. I visited a few days after the grand opening, and to be honest the staff didn't really know what they were doing yet...however, the selection of dresses both in terms of price and design is really good. From the v affordable, v italian over the top frothy, to Ellie Saab's spectacular showstopping numbers, there really is an impressive range. Check out the website before you visit, so you have an idea of what you want to try on, or it might get a bit overwhelming. I'd say this was a good place to start your search for the big dress.
